Creative Zen Micro Photo (8GB)
December 22, 2005 It's been quite awhile since Creative announced that they would come out with a color Zen Micro handheld, but now the wait is over. The new Creative Zen Micro Photo is an excellent portable audio and photo viewer and that makes it a definite Apple iPod alternative. Keep reading our review to see if it's worth your money. To start, the Zen Micro Photo is very small, even smaller than past Creative Zen models. It measures about 3 x 2 x 0.75 inches and weighs just under 4 ounces. It's also a very stylish device due to it's excellent exterior design and the variety of colors that it comes in, which are black, red, pink, green, gray, purple, white, orange, and light and dark blue. The 1.6 inch color OLED screen is crystal clear, as well as very vibrant, maybe the most vibrant that we've seen in a portable device. On the inside, the Zen Micro Photo has an 8-gigabyte microdrive and a removable/replaceable battery. The Zen Photo also has a hold switch that is popular on Apple iPods and many other MP3 players. The Zen Photo hooks up to your computer via a regular USB 2.0 connection. The controls and navigation of the Zen Photo is very clean and professionally designed. The The Creative Zen Micro Photo is compatible with MP3, WAV, and WMA files. The sound quality of Lots of other neat features included with the Zen Photo include a powerful FM radio with 32 presets and an autoscan mode. You can also use the built-in mic for WAV recordings that are of pretty good quality. You can also use pre-installed themes with the Zen Photo that allow you to customize your player's wallpaper and color schemes. The Zen Photo also comes with many playback settings, such as Pop, Rock, Vocal, and New Age, as well as Smart Volume and Bass controls. You can also sync your contacts, calendar, and tasks from Microsoft Outlook, which is excellent for anyone who doesn't want to get a PDA, but still wants to keep organized. Creative includes its MediaSource software to help manage the songs and photos on your Zen Photo, but it's pretty strange and clunky. What's better is the included Zen Photo Micro Media Explorer, which is a Windows Explorer-like window that allows you to add or remove files from your Zen Photo via drag and drop. In conclusion, the Creative Zen Micro Photo is an excellent alternative to Apple's iPod music player. It's nicely design navigation menus and controls make it easy to use and perfect for anyone, music enthusiast or not. That's why we gave the Creative Zen Micro Photo our editors' choice award.
