Cordless mice are always a huge plus for notebook users who want to be able to use a mouse, instead of the notebook's built-in pointer, whenever and wherever they want. Logitech has always been one of the leaders in the mouse industry, for both the PC and laptop market. The transition to laser technology from the old "mouse balls" allowed companies to make these mice smaller and better than ever. Logitech has just released it's new VX Revolution Cordless Laser Mouse and at first glance it looks awesome.
When you first take a look at the design of the Logitech VX Revolution, you'll notice the extreme amount of contouring and ergonomic designing that went into the making of this new mouse. At first, it looks almost too much, but when you really start to use it, you notice that it's one of the most comfortable mice that you've ever held. However, there is only a version for a right-handed mouse user, so the lefties in the world are left out. The VX Revolution is also very light-weight and compact, which makes it a perfect choice for anyone with a laptop that wants to use a mouse with their computer instead of the laptop's track-pad. It weighs just about 4-ounces and is the size of an iPod or bar of soap. According to Logitech, the VX Revolution can be used up to 30 feet away from the wireless receiver, but in testing, the mouse was able to control the notebook about 70 feet or so away, which is enormous.
As we stated before, the VX Revolution is a wireless mouse, so that is another huge plus to it. The little wireless receiver that plugs into the computer fits right into the base of the mouse when you are not using it, which is awesome and makes it really easy to store. The laser that the VX Revolution uses is a high-precision tracker and in our use, we found that it works really well and no one will be disappointed. There is also a little LED battery meter light that displays how much battery power your mouse has, as well as an on/off power indicator. Logitech claims that the mouse will run for 120 days with one AA battery.
Logitech's new "nearly frictionless" scroll wheel is, in our opinion, the best feature that the Logitech VX Revolution has to offer. The scroll wheel has two modes, the first is just like a desktop mouse, as you flick the scroll wheel, it clicks as you spin it. However, if you press a little button below the scroll wheel, it will change to the second mode, which is a click-less scroll, which allows you to fly through long documents or web pages without having to keep flicking the wheel. This allows you to spin through around 50-75 pages of a document with one flick, which is a really nice feature to have. There is also a little zoom slider on the top-left corner of the mouse, which allows you to quickly zoom in and out of documents and Web pages with one flick of the switch. Also, above the thumb-grip on the left-side of the mouse, there are two buttons that default to forward and backward, but they can be customized with the Logitech's mouse software.
The software that comes with the Logitech VX Revolution is Logitech's Set Point 3.0 software program, which is very customizable and full of options. One really nice feature is the new "quick-flip" menu. It allows you to press in the scroll wheel and a list of currently running programs appears (simi liar to the ALT+TAB keyboard combination) and you can either click on the program you want to open using the mouse pointer or you can also use the scroll wheel to scroll to the program you want.
In conclusion, the Logitech VX Revolution Laser Mouse packs all the needed features, plus some, into one awesome wireless notebook mouse. If you want a rock-solid notebook mouse with every feature that you'll ever need, this is definitely the mouse for you. In addition, we liked the Logitech VX Revolution so much, that our editors have decided to give it our "editors' choice" award.
